The girls, their parents, and teachers receive an extensive information session on the use of menstrual cups and about menstruation in general prior to the distribution of the cups. These sessions are guided by our menstrual hygiene professionals. Often, girls lack basic information about their menstrual cycle and what exactly happens in their bodies during menstruation. Through these sessions, we aim to break the taboo associated with menstruation, and ensure that the menstrual cups get used safely and hygienically.
After the distribution of menstrual cups, girls are followed-up by our menstrual hygiene experts during school visits. In this way, they can share any concerns or ask any questions they may have. Our program has been carefully developed in collaboration with professionals, including gynecologists and experts, to ensure that the provided information and guidance are of high quality.

Yes, the menstrual cups can be cleaned easily and properly. Clean water is needed to wash hands before and after inserting the cup, and to rinse the cup. Since girls can wear the cup for 8 to 12 hours, there is no need to clean the cup at school; this can be done at home when clean water is available.
The menstrual cup should be sterilized once per cycle in clean, boiling water. During education and distribution sessions, we ensure that both the girls and their parents, as well as teachers, are fully informed about all hygiene-related information. Additionally, girls receive proper guidance and post-care to ensure that the menstrual cups are used and cleaned hygienically.
We opt for the menstrual cup over other menstrual products for the following reasons:
Sustainability: Menstrual cups are environmentally friendly and can last up to 10 years, reducing waste production.
Cost-effective: With a one-time purchase, menstrual cups last for years, making them a cost-effective choice.
Leak-proof: When inserted correctly, they provide leak-proof protection, allowing girls to attend school without worries and participate in all school activities.
Long-lasting use: The menstrual cup can be worn for 8 to 12 hours, convenient for day and night use.
Comfort and health: Made from 100% medical-grade silicone, menstrual cups are safe, comfortable, and reduce the risk of infections.
We have a partnership with Ruby Cup. This cup is known as a suitable entry-level model for young girls, making them suitable for distribution at the schools in our program. The high-quality and environmentally friendly cups are manufactured by a factory in China that complies with all required certifications regarding working conditions and quality. The factory is an advanced technological facility with a limited number of employees. Due to stringent quality standards and attention to working conditions, Ruby Cup has its own team in Hong Kong closely monitoring the production process.
The challenges we face are mainly related to the fact that the use of a menstrual cup is still relatively new in East Africa. As a result, there is some hesitation and taboo surrounding its usage. We receive numerous questions from teachers, parents, and the girls themselves. We pay close attention to guiding the girls, provide informative sessions, create space for questions, and ensure proper follow-up. Involving parents is also crucial. By engaging in ongoing conversations, we notice that we can gradually break down these taboos.
